Marine Fisheries Commission debates new striper rules

On Aug. 1, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board debated new management measures intended to help rebuild the over-fished striped bass population.
Last November, scientists informed the Management Board that the population would probably rebuild by 2029, the deadline established in the striped bass management plan. But in May of this year, the board learned that 2022 recreational landings were so high that rebuilding was no longer likely.

Stakeholders react to New York DEC’s shark fishing regulation proposals

On June 1, the State Department of Environmental Conservation released proposed regulations that would provide greater protection to coastal sharks. The regulations focus on anglers who frequently catch “prohibited species” of sharks from shore.
While there was little objection to many of the proposals, restrictions on hook size and leader length proved controversial.

Reflecting on Long Island’s first spring turkey season

When New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation announced that it planned to hold a spring turkey hunt on Long Island, I, like many other Long Island hunters, felt both excitement and apprehension.
Long Island lost its original turkey population during the late 1800s, and for about 100 years, the birds were absent from its fields and forests.

New York hunters enjoy first Long Island spring turkey season

At noon on May 31, Long Island’s first spring turkey season came to an end.
The season saw hopeful turkey hunters spread out over six major parcels of state land, including the Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest, Otis Pike Preserve, Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains Preserve, Henrys Hollow Pine Barrens State Forest, Barcelona Neck Cooperative Hunting Area, and David A. Sarnoff Preserve, where both archery and shotgun hunting was allowed.

Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission tightens coastal striped bass regulations

On May 2, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board implemented a 31-inch maximum size limit for striped bass recreational fisheries, effective immediately, to conserve striped bass, making it more likely that the currently over-fished stock will be fully rebuilt by 2029. The actions, which caught some anglers by surprise, were taken after recent data indicated that 2022 striped bass landings were far higher than expected.
