Outdoor Observations: Mandatory deer registration in Michigan is a simple process

With the Oct. 1 opening of Michigan’s archery deer season, hunters are reminded that they must register their deer with the DNR.
Last year was the first year of mandatory registration in Michigan, and wildlife biologists estimate that about 75% of successful hunters followed through with the registration process. COs were patient with hunters who didn’t register in 2022 during the learning curve period, but may be less flexible this fall.

Michigan DNR director approves fishing regulation changes

In one of his first official actions, new Michigan DNR Director Scott Bowen approved several proposed fisheries regulations at the September Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing.
The director and the commission were presented with a handful of fisheries regulations to consider. Most were relatively minor changes and all were given immediate effect. Here is a summary.

New Michigan DNR director enjoys hunting, fishing

New Michigan DNR Director Scott Bowen said he grew up fishing for walleyes and still enjoys hunting and fishing, especially chasing steelhead on the Muskegon and Manistee rivers.

Bowen was appointed to head the DNR earlier this month by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“I grew up fishing for walleye on Lake Gogebic with my maternal grandfather, who was from Mass City,” Bowen said in an email to MON. “I am an enthusiastic angler – I love fishing for steelhead in particular – and I have purchased a hunting or fishing license or both most years of my adult life.“

Outdoor Observations: Michigan DNR has a new director

The Michigan DNR has a new director. Last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the appointment of M. Scott Bowen to the top position at the agency.
He replaces Dan Eichinger, who was transferred to the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy as acting director in December, then took a position in April as vice president of governmental and external affairs with Ferris State University.

Abundant bass, stocked walleyes make Michigan’s Lake Orion worth a look in Oakland County

When you make a list of the game fish available in Oakland County’s Lake Orion, all of the above make the grade. And thanks to a long-time stocking program by the Michigan DNR, you can include walleyes on the list.
The state has been stocking walleyes in the 470-acre lake since the late 1990s, and that effort has produced a decent fishery. You probably won’t limit out, but you just might catch enough ’eyes for a decent meal.
