Record EHD deer deaths piling up in three southeast Wisconsin counties
Deer in southeastern Wisconsin are suffering the state’s worst outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) since this viral disease first appeared in 2002, with nearly 900 whitetails likely dead as of early September.
Confirmed reports of EHD-killed deer as of Sept. 4 put the count at more than 700 in Washington County, more than 150 in Waukesha County and more than 30 in Ozaukee County. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) disease specialists list only firsthand reports of dead deer in the agency’s totals.

Trump’s executive order on wolf delisting does not ensure state management yet
While initial rhetoric attached to the latest executive order by President Trump made it sound like wolves will be removed from Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection, his comment to a rancher who had suffered losses, “you’re allowed to go and take care of (the problem),” wasn’t accurate.
The executive order only requires the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) to begin yet another wolf delisting process by determining if wolf populations have recovered enough to warrant state management through lethal control.

Wisconsin Mixed Bag: DNR will stock fewer pheasants
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will reduce the number of ring-necked pheasants to be stocked this fall. Due to budget constraints within the DNR’s wildlife management program, the recent stocking goal of 75,000 pheasants over 82 state-owned properties will be reduced to 65,000 birds.

In the world of sports, the New York Giants won the Super Bowl (over the Buffalo Bills and the famous “wide right” kick), the Pittsburgh Penguins were the Stanley Cup champions, and the Minnesota Twins won the World Series. And on Sept. 7, Kurt Killian of Berwick, Pa. caught the state record Chinook salmon for New York. The guide was longtime skipper and guide Capt. Facing hatchery closures, Wisconsin’s Lake Superior anglers work to rescue trout stocking
More than 120,000 brown trout eventually destined for Lake Superior will soon settle into their new over-winter home at Wisconsin’s St. Croix Falls State Fish Hatchery, thanks to the efforts – and wallets – of local fishermen.
A somewhat – maybe – mild kerfuffle developed this summer at the Les Voigt State Fish Hatchery in Bayfield as the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) clarified the extent of its fisheries, wildlife, and state parks budget deficit. The DNR’s long list of stocking and program cuts and hatchery closures included the brown trout raised every year at the Bayfield hatchery for stocking in Lake Superior.
Politics affecting Canadian tourism in New York
For what is a long list of reasons, Canadians have slowed their visitation to the Empire State – be it for shopping, vacationing, fishing, camping, and general tourism activities. The state already knew about the decline in 2020 relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, but things were starting to improve as the economy picked up and travel restrictions lessened.
However, after a brief surge in border crossings in 2024, numbers began to drop again. The most recent announcement of 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods coming into the U.S. at the end of August could be another nail in the coffin.
