Bear seasons begin New York’s big game hunts; here’s what to know

Black bear hunting is about to get underway in New York, and it will only intensify as the month goes on. An early firearms season in a number of southeastern New York Region 3 and 4 Wildlife Management Units begins Sept. 12. And on Sept. 19, the long firearms season in the Adirondack portion of the Northern Zone also opens for black bears, with the archery season opening in the remaining Northern Zone WMUs for bears that same date.

Recent favorable winters set the stage for Minnesota’s 2026 archery opener

After a record-setting year for archery harvests in 2025, Minnesota’s 2026 season is gearing up to be another strong one given the favorable winter that boosted the state’s deer population.
Paul Burr, deer coordinator for the DNR, said the beginning of the season generally starts slow. September these days usually means high temperatures even during the tail end of the month, which can squelch harvest. That said, the past few years, winter conditions have been favorable for producing more deer in the state.

Fall trout fishing in Minnesota’s driftless region… a magical time of year

Yes, fall is in the air. Each morning you feel it, don’t you? This is good news for the trout angler.
Brown trout and brook trout spawn in the fall and they are putting on the feed bag right now! Each day I’m out on the stream, I can see the fish getting a little plumper and adding a little more color.

140,000-plus hunters seek Wisconsin bear tags, points

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife biologists say bear hunters should again expect a quality hunt this fall, with the state seeing strong bear numbers in most zones.
For this season, more than 34,000 people applied for one of the 15,245 bear permits available for the 2027 hunt. More than 106,000 hunters opted to buy a preference point to improve their chances of drawing a harvest permit in a future lottery.
