Minnesota anglers battle ‘goofy’ spring weather to get on a solid bite this year

Like most open water fishing seasons, assessments from anglers, guides, and others dialed into the Minnesota fishing scene are offering mixed reviews for the front half of the 2026 campaign.
From that first cast in mid-April, to the staggering heat that arrived this week, enough time has passed to fairly gauge how fishing has been so far. Weather conditions, especially the wind, has almost earned as much conversation as local bites around most bait shop counters.

New Senate Farm Bill draft would ‘modernize’ the CRP

In what has been anticipated for weeks, Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.), chairman of the Senate committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, released a federal farm bill draft with language in it that conservation officials say would modernize and improve the Conservation Reserve Program.
This spring, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the federal farm bill (the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026), though that bill only reauthorized CRP at its current national allotment of 27 million acres. The differences on CRP would have to be worked out in conference committee, conservation officials say

Mike Schoonveld: Can anglers aid in a solution for plastic pollution?

Twenty-two million pounds of plastic waste enter the Great Lakes each year. About half sinks to the lake bottoms, where some of it will likely remain until a future glacier reshapes the lakebeds during the next ice age. The floating plastic won’t last as long, especially varieties that aren’t UV-resistant.
A small portion will be collected by environmentally conscious people and eventually end up in landfills, but most will slowly break down over the next hundred years or so into smaller and smaller fragments known as microplastics.

Steve Pollick: Return trip to Alaska brings back great memories

It is at once mesmerizing and therapeutic to sit by the sea and just…Be.
Listen to the crash and hiss of the surf, breathe in the earthy-briny-sulphury ethers in the salt air, watch the restless, endless motion of the water. It is easy to drift into dreamland and wander in pleasant places. So, it was that I lately found myself – along the panhandle seacoast in Alaska.

Funding challenges threaten future as 2026 surveys begin on Michigan’s lakes, rivers

Michigan anglers casting for bass, walleye or other fish this summer may occasionally notice biologists and technicians launching specialized boats equipped with nets and other equipment.
It’s not a covert operation – it is work that serves as a vital part of DNR’s fisheries management program. In 2025, fisheries crews completed more than 350 fisheries surveys across the state, including 225 surveys on inland lakes and 127 surveys on streams.
