Michigan deer hunters will face several regulation changes over next two seasons

Michigan deer hunters will face some of the most significant regulation changes in decades after the state’s Natural Resources Commission approved a sweeping package of new rules for the 2026 and 2027 hunting seasons.
One example: The NRC approved a new December Firearm Deer Season, which is actually a “rebranding” of the muzzleloader season. The change does not affect the Upper Peninsula, where the muzzleloader season remains intact.

Walleyes a target in effort to alter regulations for commercial fishing in Michigan

With Great Lakes whitefish in steep decline, should Michigan cast a lifeline to commercial fishers and allow them to catch other species?
Even if those species are walleyes and trout? That was the subject of debate as the state House Natural Resources and Tourism Committee took up a pair of bills that would overhaul the state’s commercial fishing regulations.

Michigan bill would require hunting, trapping season if wolves are federally delisted

Michigan lawmakers are again weighing whether gray wolves should be hunted in the Upper Peninsula, reviving a long-running debate that pits wildlife management concerns against wolf protection efforts.
New legislation under debate is based on assumptions federal officials will remove wolves from its Endangered Species List. House Bill 6008, introduced May 21 by state Rep. Dave Prestin, would require the Michigan DNR to establish a wolf hunting and trapping season within 90 days of the gray wolf being removed from the list.

Many factors influence Great Lakes water levels

The Environmental Law Policy Center is a Chicago-based environmental watchdog that advocates for the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes.
It has recently taken on polluters of all sorts, from concentrated animal feeding operations, whose untreated manure spurs toxic algae blooms, to industrial pollution from steel mills, oil transmission pipelines, and contaminated sediment disposal. On May 19, the Center hosted a speaker who updated an online audience about some likely short and long-term directions that Great Lakes water levels may be taking.

C.B. Bylander: Minnesota shifting to a smarter approach to walleye stocking

I don’t know how good walleye fishing was back in the 1880s.
But I do know Minnesotans believed it should be better. I say this because by 1887 – just 29 years after statehood – Minnesota had built a state hatchery so walleyes could be reared, trucked, and released into waters deemed ripe for more fish. The state has been doing this ever since, which is 139 years.

Colleen Foehrenbacher: Three reasons I’m obsessed with chasing gobblers

If you head into the woods to chase turkeys on a spring morning in southeast Minnesota where I live you’ll likely hear gobbles echoing from every direction. Every gobble tells you a bird is close, and each one fuels the belief that an encounter could happen at any moment.

Conditions lining up for moderate algae bloom on Western Lake Erie

On May 7, the first 2026 Western Lake Erie HAB (harmful algal bloom) early season projection was released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science. Weekly updates were provided on the following Thursdays.
Based on Maumee River flow volume and Total Bioavailable Phosphorous (TBP) loading levels, this bulletin provides an early glimpse on the potential size of microcystis blooms, a cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, to expect this summer.
