On May 7, the first 2026 Western Lake Erie HAB (harmful algal bloom) early season projection was released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science. Weekly updates were provided on the following Thursdays.
Based on Maumee River flow volume and Total Bioavailable Phosphorous (TBP) loading levels, this bulletin provides an early glimpse on the potential size of microcystis blooms, a cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, to expect this summer.
