C.B. Bylander: Minnesota shifting to a smarter approach to walleye stocking

I don’t know how good walleye fishing was back in the 1880s.
But I do know Minnesotans believed it should be better. I say this because by 1887 – just 29 years after statehood – Minnesota had built a state hatchery so walleyes could be reared, trucked, and released into waters deemed ripe for more fish. The state has been doing this ever since, which is 139 years.

A quick chat with Dr. Scott Petrie on efforts to shift America’s declining hunter numbers

The arc of the American hunter has been bending south for a long time.
Fifty years ago, hunters were far more numerous. Today, according to government statistics, they comprise but 4.5% of adult Americans. This decline is largely due to urbanization, shifting societal views, Baby Boomers hanging up their guns and fewer nearby places to hunt, often due to less habitat or more “No Trespassing” signs.

C.B. Bylander: When the time is right, give the DNR an earful on management of Minnesota wildlife areas

Numbers tell tales.
And sometimes the same numbers tell very different tales depending upon how they are used. Let’s use Minnesota’s Wildlife Management Area system as an example. To its credit, Minnesota has about 1,500 WMAs totaling some 1.4 million acres. About 40% of this acreage – or roughly 492,000 acres – are covered by plans that guide management, work planning, accomplishment measuring and more.

C.B. Bylander: Most go through many stages of acceptance with new fishing regulations

It is likely that when the 2027 Minnesota fishing regulation booklet is published, a one-character change will appear on Page 29 or so.
Specifically, where “six” has appeared for 71 years as the statewide limit for walleye, the number “four” will appear instead. Will this be an historic change? In a way, yes.
