Jeremiah Haas: What Quad Cities anglers need to know about lake sturgeon

Lake sturgeon are a fish species that create stories of a lifetime for many anglers. To pursue them, historically, you had to either go to Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, St. Croix River, or to the northwoods on the U.S.-Canadian border.
That statement has been true for the last century but things are beginning to change around the Quad Cities waterways. Multiple states are working on the restoration of the species and some of those animals are showing up locally.

Dan Ladd: Hoping for a successful late turkey season

Anyone who has ever played a sport of any kind, whether it was baseball or basketball in high school, or even bowling, billiards or golf (or more likely today, pickellball) knows what a slump is.
Those of us who hunt and fish know the same misery from time to time, and that has been the story of my spring turkey season thus far. And it began right away.

Dean Bortz: It was a turkey hunt like never seen before…

John Madden could have made the call on a first-season gobbler finally killed by yours truly in Zone 7’s Vilas County.
“And there goes Bortz yet again, rumblin’, bumblin’, and stumblin’ through the woods. He missed again. No, wait. He did hit it. There he goes again, fumblin’, bumblin’ – Pat, have you ever seen a javelin toss during a turkey hunt? What’s this guy doing?”

What’s for dinner, bobcat? A look at the dining habits of this elusive predator

Bobcats often feel almost familiar; like an animal we should easily understand – but that sense of familiarity can be misleading.
They are common enough that most outdoors people in Illinois know what one looks like, but elusive enough that seeing one still feels like an event. A few seconds of movement at the edge of a field, a tail disappearing into brush, or a set of tracks in mud or snow is often all the evidence they leave behind.

Commentary: After Boundary Waters vote, no public lands are off-limits

When Congress voted last month to overturn the 20-year minerals withdrawal conserving the headwaters of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, hunters and anglers across the country took notice – and not just because the vote threatened the Boundary Waters, an iconic destination for fishing, hunting, paddling, and camping. It also set a dangerous precedent.

Top options for mid-sized 4×4 SUVs, trucks for the outdoors enthusiast

For many who regularly enjoy various outdoor pursuits, a mid-sized 4×4 pickup or SUV often hits a sweet spot for that interest, balancing towing ability, cargo capacity, and off-road performance with manageable driving dimensions for urban environments.
Mid-sized trucks are shorter and narrower than full-sized models, with bed width often under four feet between the wheel wells.
