Bird flu blamed for death of popular eaglets monitored on livestream

Two bald eaglets died in recent weeks in their tree nest in Pittsburgh, and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is the presumed cause.
Six-week old GH4 and GH3 began exhibiting signs of illness, including lethargy and weakness, several days before they passed on May 17 and 18 in the city’s Glen Hazel section, according to PixCams, which has live-
streamed the nest for 14 years and had never before recorded such a loss.

Ohio’s spring turkey kill ahead of last year as season nears its end

With three weeks down for Ohio’s South Zone wild turkey hunting season – and two weeks for the five-county Northeast Zone, participants were rounding third and heading for home.
By Ohio Outdoor News’ press time, the final numbers for the entire season were not yet available. As far as additional statistics go, turkey hunters checked in 14,886 birds by May 17 for both zones, says the Ohio DNR’s Division of Wildlife.

Three anglers rescued off of Kelleys Island waters in Lake Erie

Three Lake Erie anglers were rescued after their boat capsized and they fell into the lake just off of Kelleys Island, authorities said.
According to reporting by Fox 8 WJW Television in Cleveland, one of the men even treaded water for hours before he was rescued. Kelleys Island Police Chief James Bartus told the TV station that it is a “miracle” that all three survived the harrowing experience.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Focusing efforts on the future with youth fishing

As we approach National Fishing and Boating Week (set this year for June 6-14), as well as the prospects of summer weather, this is the perfect time to start thinking about youth fishing opportunities.
Getting the next generation of anglers in tune with our water resources is critical for the future of this popular pastime. Sometimes it’s time to hit the reset button. One prime example of refocusing energy and funding sources is the Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Derby that was held for 50 years in Western New York.

Ohio’s Outdoor Trailblazers: Tom Kirker is a ‘nature boy’ at heart

When Tom Kirker was growing up in the Columbus suburb of Bexley, the last thing one thought he would be was an outdoorsman and lover of all things nature.
Alas, Bexley is inner city, one of the last places in Central Ohio that might give rise to a budding naturalist. “I was always an outdoor kid in the alleys of Bexley, looking at birds and frogs and toads,” Kirker said recently.
