Hunters take 104 elk during Michigan’s December season

Bruce Nelson of Hastings waited more than six decades for a chance at harvesting a prized Michigan elk. His patience finally was rewarded in 2025 when he drew an antlerless tag and made the most of his opportunity during the December elk hunt period.
“I shot a nice big cow elk on the first day of the nine-day hunt,” Nelson told Michigan Outdoor News. “I’ve been trying to get an elk license (in Michigan) since 1964 and I applied every year I could. It was a 61-year journey.”

CWD found in three new Michigan counties in past year

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirmed 41 cases of chronic wasting disease in wild deer in 2025, including three in counties with no previous positives.
Another four deer tested positive for tuberculosis out of more than 4,500 samples from an 11-county surveillance area in the northeast Lower Peninsula. CWD-positive deer were found in Washtenaw, Genesee and Allegan counties for the first time.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: What does 2026 hold for Lake Erie anglers in New York and beyond?

As we kick off a new year, it’s time to look forward and speculate on what the next 12 months have in store for us.
One question that must be on everyone’s mind if you are a Lake Erie walleye fisherman is will it be a repeat performance on the water once May 1 hits on the calendar? Walleye fishing was phenomenal in 2025 and the best quote I heard came from Capt. Jim Steel, president of the Eastern Lake Erie Charter Boat Association: “You could go out on the lake and do everything wrong … and still catch fish.”

Mike Raykovicz: Crossbow accessories can make a difference

I’ve lost track of the number of hunters I know who have bought a crossbow recently. With their approval for use during New York’s regular archery season, more hunters are embracing their use.
Their main appeal seems to be among gun hunters who want to hunt the early deer season but have never had the desire or inclination to own a compound.

Jeremy Smith: Perch action thriving again this winter on Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs

Perch are important species across the Ice Belt.
Not only are they one of the main forage species for a number of larger fish species, but their economic impact also is huge in comparison to many other game fish. Anglers, particularly those of the ice-fishing variety, will travel far and wide in search of a good perch bite.
