Vermont moose hunters take 68 animals during 2025 seasons

Vermont’s fall moose hunting season resulted in 68 harvested moose between the Oct. 1-7 archery season and the Oct. 18-23 regular season.
The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department issued 180 moose hunting permits this year, with hunting only allowed in Wildlife Management Unit E, in northeastern Vermont.

Ducks Unlimited, University of Delaware study eastern black ducks

Ducks Unlimited has partnered with the University of Delaware and the Black Duck Joint Venture (BDJV) on a study evaluating the response of wintering black ducks to habitat restoration and enhancement of freshwater wetlands.
The project also includes the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Working Lands for Wildlife Black Duck Program, which offers assistance to landowners who voluntarily enroll their properties in conservation easements.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation honors New York Outdoor News contributors

A pair of regular New York Outdoor News contributors have been recognized for their philanthropy efforts by the Western New York chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Frequent news and feature writer Bill Hilts Jr., and Frank Campbell, who contributes regularly to the Niagara County fishing reports, were both recognized along with Jim Hanley for their “Commitment to a Cure.”

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin’s nine-day gun-deer season has lost its clout

Wisconsin long considered its nine-day gun-deer season “the hammer” for managing whitetails, accounting for more than 90% of the annual deer kill during the early 1970s, and routinely 85% of it through 1995.
But November’s gun season has lost its clout. Since 2018, four of the past six gun seasons generated less than 60% of the total autumn deer kill.

Other than the upcoming holiday week late muzzleloading hunt in New York’s Southern Zone, and the January hunt on Long Island, another big game hunting season is just about in the books.
