Bridle, all-purpose vehicle trails to close for winter season in many of Ohio’s state forests

“Closing (these trails) seasonally allows us to protect the land and maintain the trails for years to come,” said ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser. (Stock photo)

Columbus — Specific trails and areas for many of Ohio’s state forests will close for the winter season in early December, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Forestry.

Horseback riding trails, also known as bridle trails, will close on Monday, Dec. 1, at state forests, while all-purpose vehicle (APV) areas at Pike, Richland Furnace, and Perry state forests will close on Monday, Dec. 8.

“Both of these types of trails are loved by many and see a great deal of activity each year,” said ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser. “Closing them seasonally allows us to protect the land and maintain the trails for years to come.”

Ohio’s state forest APV areas stay open longer during the regular deer gun season to provide people with disabilities greater access to the state forests. The seasonal closures have been proposed in annual state forest work plans and have received public input.

During this seasonal closure period, forest staff and organizations with approved volunteer agreements can safely maintain trails. Signage will be installed at parking areas and trailheads, and the trails will be designated as closed.

Bridle trails will reopen for riding on Monday, March 30, 2026, and APV areas will reopen on Friday, April 3, 2026. Maumee State Forest’s bridle trails and APV areas are unaffected by seasonal closures and will remain open year-round.
