Ohio’s spring turkey hunters post highest success rates since 2018

Turkey hunters fooled a lot of gobblers – and even some bearded hens – into believing they were the real deal during Ohio’s recently concluded spring turkey season.
In all, Ohio’s turkey hunters killed 15,673 birds checked from April 22 through May 28, and that includes the 1,823 turkeys tallied during the two-day youth turkey season April 15-16.

Ohio’s trapshooting championship coming up in June

The Ohio State Trapshooting Tournament will take over the Cardinal Shooting Center the week of June 19, and shooters will see a very different background than they have for the past few years.
Due to extensive damage and the high cost of repairs, the Cardinal Center team is removing the stop shot curtain along the trapshooting line.

Ohio Insider: Diving further into the demise of state’s ruffed grouse

We all realize that curtailing hunting of ruffed grouse isn’t the answer to bringing the bird back. Hunting, in Ohio, at least, moves the needle barely a blip. According to Division of Wildlife (DOW) statistics, there are only about 3,500 people in Ohio who identify themselves as grouse hunters and those hunters average about 6.1 days afield each season in search of grouse. The total number of harvested grouse was less than 200 (195) this past season.

A look at all we lose, and sometimes find again, in our outdoor pursuits

The Great Vault of Lost and Found Outdoor Gear must lie in a remote mountain valley somewhere, and if we ever find that spot what a trove it will hold.
I am not talking about the odd pair of wool socks left at a fish camp in northern Canada, or a moth-eaten old sweater missing from the duffel after a cross-country ski trip. I am talking real stuff – say, a spare fly rod inadvertently left by a stream, hiking boots tied and hanging on a mountainside tree, or even, perhaps, that backup hunting rifle you took to elk camp.

Early warning for ‘big bloom’ of algae on Western Lake Erie

In what has become a seasonal service provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science using the data collected by Heidelberg University’s National Center for Water Quality Research, Western Lake Erie’s algae bloom could be moderately severe this summer.
These researchers said that the severity index value could range from 2.5 to 6.0. That is, unless precipitation rates diminish during the rest of the spring, which would allow bloom size to remain smaller.

Civilian Marksmanship Program offers public shooting, learning programs

Port Clinton, Ohio — For more than 100 years, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has offered shooting and training opportunities to the public at their facilities located at Camp Perry in Ohio.
The CMP was established in 1903 when Congress and the President established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and National Matches. The impetus for its establishment was an idea promoted by President Teddy Roosevelt. He believed that marksmanship skills developed through regular practice and competition contributed to the nation’s defense.
