I like to think of it as stealth fishing – tiptoeing quietly into skinny water in my kayak in search of bass and panfish.
Mine is a cruising kayak, a 14-foot Current Designs boat with a drop-rudder, not an angler-specific craft. But no matter. A small tackle bag and an ultralight spinning rod easily fit in the oval cockpit between my legs.

The Ohio State Trapshooting Tournament will take over the Cardinal Shooting Center the week of June 19, and shooters will see a very different background than they have for the past few years.

We all realize that curtailing hunting of ruffed grouse isn’t the answer to bringing the bird back. Hunting, in Ohio, at least, moves the needle barely a blip. According to Division of Wildlife (DOW) statistics, there are only about 3,500 people in Ohio who identify themselves as grouse hunters and those hunters average about 6.1 days afield each season in search of grouse. The total number of harvested grouse was less than 200 (195) this past season.

In what has become a seasonal service provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science using the data collected by Heidelberg University’s National Center for Water Quality Research, Western Lake Erie’s algae bloom could be moderately severe this summer.
These researchers said that the severity index value could range from 2.5 to 6.0. That is, unless precipitation rates diminish during the rest of the spring, which would allow bloom size to remain smaller.
Anglers are continuing to catch crappies in spawning mode and Lake Erie is on fire again – for fishermen.
