Ohio’s deer archery season off and running in 2025; here’s what to know

Ohio has a long deer archery season that is open Saturday, Sept. 27, through Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026.
Hunters may use crossbows, compound bows, recurve bows, and longbows to pursue deer during the archery season. Deer are Ohio’s most sought-after wild game and an important food source for families across the Buckeye State, according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

A quick chat with wild turkey expert Dr. Michael Chamberlain

Back in 2011, wildlife researchers began noticing a trend: declining wild turkey numbers in parts of the country. The initial concern focused on southern states and the southern Midwest.
“Originally that’s where the concerns kind of blossomed,” said Dr. Michael Chamberlain, a National Wild Turkey Federation distinguished professor at the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. “But I think the evidence is pretty clear that since then there’s a growing recognition that populations are declining in a number of other states, including some of the northeastern states and some of the Upper Midwest states.”

CWD confirmed in Michigan’s Genesee County for the first time

Genesee is now the 16th Michigan county where chronic wasting disease has been identified in the wild deer population, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. An adult doe found acting ill in Gaines Township recently tested positive for the disease.
The CWD finding was confirmed by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which works with the DNR to identify CWD in Michigan’s wild deer herd.

Minnesota’s pro bass anglers cream of an elite crop

If it wasn’t abundantly clear already, 2025 was proof positive that Minnesota churns out some pretty talented bass anglers.
Back in March, Grand Rapids native Easton Fothergill ran away with the Bassmaster Classic title, besting the second-place finisher in the biggest bass tournament of them all by more than 8 pounds. Several weeks after that, Fothergill and New Market pro Seth Feider each scored top 10 finishes at the Bassmaster Elite event at Lake Fork in Texas.

Ryan Rothstein: Ethical shot placement, quick cooling, and a little planning crucial for early-season deer hunters

Unless you’re fortunate enough to have access to a walk-in cooler, having a deer on the ground in the early season can be a stressful experience. Venison is a prized meat, and I’m obsessive about venison quality and maximizing my meat yield from every deer harvested.
Unfortunately, heat in particular works against us this time of year. Here’s how I’ve learned to manage my venison in the heat.
