“It was a challenging year.”
That’s how Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Shelby Adams summed up the early elk season that concluded on September 29.
“We had that ice storm last March, and (the downed trees from storm damage) had an impact on elk movement and hunter’s ability to move around and get to the elk,” Adams told Michigan Outdoor News.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has completed an aerial seeding project via helicopter to disperse jack pine, white pine and black spruce seeds on DNR-managed forests across the state. The flights are part of the DNR’s typical fall reforestation work, which can also include activities like direct seeding and planting, bud capping, prescribed burns, and other site preparation.

A possibly record crowd of more than 100 people attended a special meeting of the Ohio Wildlife Council in this southeastern city on Sept. 17 to hear how state wildlife authorities intend to deal with an unprecedented outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in the area.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife introduced a proposed change to the state hunting rules that would reduce the bag limit for white-tailed deer from three to two in Athens, Meigs, and Washington counties beginning Dec. 1, and running until Feb. 1, 2026.
Waterfowlers are the gamblers of Ohio’s hunting landscape. Even more so than their counterparts for deer and turkey. The waterfowler’s day may confront a host of enfeebling conditions, even during a several-week season.
Ohio Outdoor News approached the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s chief waterfowl biologist, Michael Ervin, for his take on this year’s coming Ohio waterfowl hunting seasons. That’s plural, too, since the state’s duck/goose hunting scene is a myriad of zones, and a series of opening and closing dates.

More sights are on deer in Pittsburgh this fall since the city has doubled the number of parks in its managed archery program and added a new mentored youth component.
It will again engage federal sharpshooters in targeted removal of deer when the season ends. What started as a pilot in 2023-24 in Frick and Riverview parks grew last year to include Schenley, Highland and Emerald View parks, where 50 archers harvested a total of 199 deer.
