Iowa teen dies after accidental shooting while squirrel hunting

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced earlier this week that a 17-year-old squirrel hunter has died from injuries sustained in an accidental shooting by another hunter in rural Brighton.
The incident occurred Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. The DNR said that Carson Ryan, 17, of Washington, was mistaken for a squirrel by a member of his hunting party and was struck in the back of the head. Ryan was transported to UI Health Care Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Minnesota company, Priogen, makes CWD testing more accessible for hunters

“The state agencies have particular goals to help manage the disease. But that may not align with the goals of the hunter – to be able to understand, does the animal have CWD … so they can make an informed decision on whether or not to eat it,” said Peter Larsen, Priogen co-founder and CEO.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota duck opener lived down to expectations; but a good pheasant opener awaits?

Sadly, expectations were notably low in our particular corner of southwestern Minnesota for the 2025 duck-hunting opener this past Saturday. So low, in fact, that a couple of members of our longtime duckin’ crew opted to address other responsibilities rather than spend two mornings slough-side.
I personally know a black Labrador retriever who’s likely disappointed she didn’t get to do – not once – the one thing that’s right there in the name of her breed.

Wisconsin Wardens at Work: Landowner hunting exemptions do have limits

Exceptions for Wisconsin landowners hunting rabbits and squirrels on their property are not always well understood or are often overlooked.
In part, the hunting regulations for the fall of 2024 and spring of 2025 state, “The owner or occupant of any land and members of the family may, without a license and subject to all other restrictions except seasons, hunt their own property for rabbit and squirrel year-round.”
Cross a fence, even with permission, or go onto state land, or enter another’s land, and now that landowner needs a small game license to shoot rabbits because he is off his own land.

I’m a forward-thinking sportsman, so I’m always looking forward to an upcoming hunting season. That’s especially true this year since I’m getting an early start by accompanying a buddy on his Newfoundland moose hunt.
