How can you beat hunting pressure? Here are three tips to consider

Public land is generally considered the most difficult type of ground to hunt, and for good reason. The more of us who are out there trying to kill deer, the more the deer are going to do to avoid all of us.
This is why when you turn on the Outdoor Channel, you don’t see a lot of TV hosts spending time in trees on dirt that’s open to anyone. Private land isn’t immune to the pressure issue, either. Pressure is pressure, but that doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause.

Ohio Lake sturgeon implanted with acoustic tags as part of longterm study

The Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife’s (DOW) Sandusky Fisheries Research Unit is partnering with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ohio State University, and the University of Toledo to electronically tag lake sturgeon with acoustic tags procured by the USGS.
Fisheries biologist Matt Faust, who is leading this new project that started in June, said that “The purpose of this study is to allow the DOW to learn more about the habitat use and where/when these tagged individuals spend their time over the next 10 years.

Outdoor Insights: An update on Minnesota’s wild rice and sandhill crane hunting season

Three days of wild ricing late this summer produced exactly 300 pounds of ripe wild rice for me and my partners. Post-processing, that equates to about 45% (or 135 pounds) of finished rice that we’ll split – more than enough to fill the pantry and get my family through another year … and then some.
Late summer 2025 won’t go down as the greatest wild ricing year ever in Minnesota, but it was a major improvement from the dismal crop of 2024.

Tom Venesky: Is it time to bring back furbearer bounties in Pennsylvania?

I thought I had a raccoon problem when I saw an adult female with four young ones scamper out of the barn one morning.
But that was nothing compared to what was going on down the road. While I set live traps to deal with the destructive furbearers (when a raccoon gets into a barn, it is very much destructive), a few neighbors were doing the same to deal with their own infestations.

Minnesota’s Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council considers 54 projects that total over $500 million

Another cycle of hopeful applicants pitched their respective projects to Minnesota’s Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council during two late-August meetings that lasted almost 19 hours collectively.
Various projects to expand wildlife habitat for prairie bird species in the southern parts of the state, expanding wildlife management areas, land acquisition, or habitat enhancement work around the state are on the table. In total, the 54 projects sought more than $500 million in funding from the outdoor heritage fund.
