Historic sale of dams clears the way for salmon to return to Maine’s Kennebec River

The Nature Conservancy on Tuesday announced a landmark investment worth $168 million to purchase and oversee Brookfield Renewable’s four hydroelectric dams on the lower Kennebec River in Maine, paving the way for their eventual removal.
The sale all but guarantees unfettered access for endangered Atlantic salmon and other seagoing fish from the Gulf of Maine to their historic spawning grounds upstream on the Sandy River for the first time since the Kennebec River was permanently dammed more than a century ago.

More than 160,000 apply for Florida’s first bear hunt in a decade, many who don’t intend to hunt

Florida’s first bear hunt in a decade drew more than 160,000 applicants for a far more limited number of permits, including from opponents who are trying to reduce the number of bears killed.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will award 172 bear hunt permits by random lottery for the December hunt, down slightly from the 187 permits initially proposed. The permit allows a hunter to kill one bear in areas where the bear population is deemed large enough.

Low water levels close lower Salmon River, a popular fishing section in New York

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently took actions to mitigate impacts of unusual low water flows along the Salmon River during the annual salmon run. These include modification of water releases and delayed opening of the river’s lower fly-fishing section ahead of the annual run, which attracts thousands of anglers every year.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: What to consider when selecting a crossbow

A new era in big game archery hunting will begin on Oct. 1 in the Southern Zone of New York State (and Sept. 27 in the Northern Zone for that matter) – crossbows will now be included as legal archery equipment.
Jeff Pippard of Niagara Outdoors in North Tonawanda is a respected archery shop. He passes along some tips to consider if you are purchasing a crossbow.

Minnesota’s grouse hunt off to a (typically) slow start in ’25, and good opportunities for fall turkeys

The ruffed grouse report after a week-plus of hunting is short and sweet. Since the heat has lingered a bit longer than normal at the start of the grouse season on Sept. 13, there hasn’t been much action, according to Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR migratory gamebird specialist.
“It’s just been so dang hot. … I think things have been pretty slow. I haven’t heard a lot of good reports from anywhere,” Huck said.

Bob Gwizdz: Time to bring back the trout stamp in Michigan

Michigan’s proposed hunting and fishing license fee increase appears to be, if not dead in the water, on serious life support.
While the Senate version of a fee increase bill is still breathing, the House has passed an overall budget that slices appropriations to the Department of Natural Resources dramatically. And I’m told by Lansing insiders that even if the Senate bill goes through, it has virtually no chance in the House, because one representative with a lot to say about it has an axe to grind with the DNR.
