Minnesota pheasant numbers leap 50% in annual roadside survey

Pheasant numbers in the 2025 Minnesota August Roadside Survey were up nearly 50% from 2024 and 21% above the 10-year average, the Minnesota DNR announced Tuesday.
“The increase in pheasant numbers across the state and all regions is great news,” said Steven Woodley, acting upland game research scientist. “Our milder winter likely helped the overwinter survival of hens, and the drier and warmer spring created better conditions for nesting and brood-rearing relative to last year.”

USFWS survey shows duck numbers hold steady despite dry conditions

Ducks Unlimited reported in a press statement Tuesday the release of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2025 Waterfowl Population Status Report, which indicated overall duck numbers largely were unchanged from a year ago across the traditional survey area.
The report includes the results of surveys and population estimates from both the USFWS and the Canadian Wildlife Service, as well as from several states and provinces. It’s vital to the frameworks of duck-hunting seasons in 2026.

Survey shows Iowa’s pheasant population at 20 year high, ‘banner’ hunting season expected

Iowa’s statewide pheasant population is at a 20-year high, and state wildlife experts are forecasting a banner year for hunters.
“The mild winter really put us over the top this year,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife research biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “Our adult hen survival was excellent; our adult rooster survival was excellent. That really drove the population increase.”

Bates State Forest: No frills, just wildlife in New York’s Schoharie County

There’s nothing fancy about the Bates State Forest in Schoharie County.
No trails. No designated campsites. No formal parking areas. But in many ways, it’s everything a state-owned tract designed for recreational use should be: managed for reforestation, timber production, hunting, hiking, watershed protection, and wildlife habitat.
