Deer hunters have gradually and reluctantly moved past the old mindset of avoiding doe harvests. In some parts of Wisconsin protecting does is important, but for much of the state deer populations have exploded and herd management has required a new approach.
The National Deer Association recently reported that at least eight states are struggling to keep deer populations in balance due to low antlerless harvests.

My wife and I were in our kitchen almost 15 years ago on a summer Sunday afternoon when I brought up deer hunting, a subject she’d heard me mention frequently.
“I want to get really good at bowhunting whitetails,” I said.
“OK,” she responded, barely looking up from the task she was tending to.
“I don’t think you understand,” I told her. “What I have been doing isn’t working. I’m not seeing the results I want, and it’s going to take me committing to this far more than I have been.”

My jerkbait skipped across the turbid water as I cast into a well-known river in the Driftless Region of southeastern Minnesota. The lure came to rest under a low-hanging limestone shelf, and I let it float for a moment before twitching it ever so slightly.
My cast was intentional. A brilliant morning sun pierced the water, prompting fish to seek refuge in any shade offered by rock ledges and overhanging riverbanks and trees. Then, the water erupted as a chunky smallmouth bass inhaled my lure.

When Jonathan Swift wrote “A Modest Proposal” in 1729, it was widely regarded as an inflammatory essay. In his essay, Swift suggested that the children of the starving Irish poor be sold so as not to be a burden on their parents.
Swift went so far as to suggest that a healthy, well-nursed, year-old child would make a nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled. It was socioeconomic and political satire at its finest, and, understandably, it was met with shock and outrage coupled with widespread misunderstanding and confusion.
