Brian Nesvik, past Wyoming fish and game director, confirmed as lead for USFWS

The past director of the Wyoming Fish and Game Department has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Brian Nesvik succeeds Paul Souza, who stepped in on April 8, 2025 as acting director of the agency. Souza took the reigns from Martha Williams, a President Biden appointee, who held the post March 8, 2022 to Jan. 20, 2025. She vacated the position  when President Donald Trump took over the presidency. U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) praised Nesvik’s qualifications.

Bill introduced by Michigan congressman would ban bear baiting on federal lands

A Michigan congressman wants to ban bear baiting on federal lands, claiming the practice puts the public and bears in danger, though sportsmen aren’t taking the proposal seriously.
“The practice of bear baiting creates danger for both people and animals, contradicting what federal agencies tell the public: do no feed the bears,” Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Detroit, said in a statement. “This bill is about strengthening public safety, animal welfare, and responsible wildlife management.”

Minnesota study shows importance of using wakeboats in water deeper than 20 feet

Recently the University of Minnesota’s St. Anthony Falls Laboratory research scientists wrapped up phase two of a study to understand the effects that wakeboats have on lake ecosystems.
What they found is that wakeboats traveling at semi-displacement speeds, or in surfing mode, disrupt the lakebed when the water depth is less than 20 feet deep.

Streams of Thought: Expect DNR to soon make official proposal to drop Minnesota’s walleye limit

In late June, the Minnesota DNR sent forth a news release that requested the state’s anglers – and whomever else, I suppose – step to the plate and complete a questionnaire regarding “a possible reduction in the statewide walleye possession limit from six to four fish,” per the release.
I mention it today because the time is nigh that the questionnaire no longer will be available: Its expiration date is Aug. 15.
