Pennsylvania’s smallmouth record, caught from an unlikely water, nears 30 years old; will it be broken?

It was just shy of 30 years ago that Robert Steelman, of Havertown, made Pennsylvania history.
In 1997, Steelman was fishing tiny Scotts Run Lake in French Creek State Park in Berks County when he caught a monster smallmouth bass weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces.
It was – and still is – the biggest smallmouth bass ever caught in Pennsylvania. For 28 years, Steelman’s state record has stood unmatched. Will it ever be broken? How did a bass like that come from Scotts Run Lake, of all places?

Mark Johnson, long-time Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council director in Minnesota, to retire in January

Come September, Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council Executive Director Mark Johnson will celebrate 11 years in the role. It also will be his last such anniversary, as he eyes retirement in early January.
“Every day has been enjoyable. … I think it’s because I just really feel honored at being in this position and seeing the things I do and working with the people I do,” Johnson said.

Here’s how to maximize your catch in late summer when bass school up

It might seem too early to start thinking about fall bass and their tendency to school up, but it’s not. The nights are dangerously close to turning chilly, and the water temperatures that rose all spring and early summer are about to reverse course.
With this change comes a behavioral shift by both largemouth and smallmouth bass.

Big options for small game hunting rounds

The best rifle cartridge ever created for taking small game is the .22 rimfire.
From CB Caps to Long Rifle, all .22 rimfire ammo is “the bomb” for squirrels, cottontails, snowshoe hares, and even jackrabbits and groundhogs. But, there are other options. Allow me to rank them by my preference. Then you decide.

Gretchen Steele: A late-summer bucket list to accomplish in Illinois’ outdoors

August in southern Illinois is not for the faint of heart – or the poorly hydrated. The tomatoes are splitting on the vine, the cicadas scream like tiny chainsaws in the trees, and the air feels like someone left the soup pot on. Still, somehow, this month holds a wild, golden magic.

Fishing on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi River features good friends, great days

Gently-rocking waves and a hot midafternoon sun had nearly put me to sleep when my fishing rod bent sharply and began to quiver. This was no snag or hapless clam, both of which I’m accustomed to hooking on the bottom of the Mississippi River.
Instinctively, I jumped from my seat to simultaneously pull the rod out of its holder and to set the hook as my reel began to whine.

Oak Duke: Here’s how to set up a signpost rub for whitetails

August is the sweet spot in time to set up a signpost rub… or two, or three.
Why? I’ve found trail-cams focused on homemade signpost rubs are by far the most effective way to chronicle big bucks. As whitetail bachelor groups dissociate in early September, bucks seek out signpost rubs when on excursion. But what if you hunt in a rub desert? No worries.
