New report shows public supports hunting and recreational sport shooting, but ‘intention matters’

Public support for hunting and sport shooting in the United States remains strong, but highly conditional, according to the 2025 Americans’ Attitudes Toward Hunting and Sport Shooting report, a new national study conducted by Responsive Management for the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports.

Ralph Loos: Fish are much smarter than we think… I think

I just took my first fishing trip of the year, attempting to lure walleyes while spending a weekend in a mountain cabin on a lake near Winter Park, Colorado.
The going was tough, to say the least. Over breakfast on the last day of our stay, I mumbled to my female companion something along the lines of, “Mountain walleyes seem to be a lot smarter than flat-land walleyes.” Without missing a beat, my female companion shot back, “I’m starting to think the same thing about men.”

Lake Tetonka in Minnesota’s Le Sueur County: lots of ‘lake fish,’ with added river effect

Lake Tetonka is sure to please the multi-species angler. As part of the Cannon River system, this Le Sueur County fishery seems to hold a little bit of everything – the typical lake suspects and a wide variety of river fish species as well.

Steve Carney: Cabbage beds are cream of the crop

By late June in Minnesota, weed growth has expanded in lakes, and things are changing dramatically.
Cabbage is my favorite type of vegetation because it is leafy and thick, which provides overhead cover for both predators and baitfish. Some stands of cabbage are often widespread, while others are located in small patches. But they’re almost always in shallow water, from 6 to 11 feet in most lakes. In very clear lakes, cabbage can be as deep as 20 feet.

Fishing ‘solid’ on this Adirondack campground water — Lake Harris (or is it Harris Lake?)

Is it Lake Harris, or Harris Lake? That depends on whom you ask about the 300-acre multi-species fishery in Newcomb, Essex County. Even the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation mixes things up when it comes to the terminology. It’s often referred to as Harris Lake, yet there’s a DEC campground on the lake known as Lake Harris Campground and Day Use Area.
