Saint Lawrence River produces New York record 4.1-pound fallfish

For the second time this freshwater fishing season, a new state record fish has been caught in New York.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that Alex Pidhorodeckyj, of Peekskill, landed a 4-pound, 1-ounce fallfish while fishing the St. Lawrence River near Massena. Pidhorodeckyj was jigging for walleyes and pike when me made the catch, which broke the previous fallfish record caught in 2009 by half a pound.

Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin turkey hunters notch fifth-best season

If one of my grandchildren pursues a career in wildlife management, I hope they sign on as Wisconsin’s chief turkey biologist. They would likely enjoy little stress and enduring job satisfaction, given the happiness turkeys inspire among hunters.
This spring, for example, Wisconsin hunters registered 50,287 turkeys, the fifth-best total since our 1983 inaugural season. That kill was only 447 shy of 2024’s total of 50,734, and only 2,593 (5%) below the record 52,880 shot in 2008.

When is water too warm for the safety of muskies?

Without a doubt, muskie anglers are among the most conservation-minded of all fishermen. Release is a priority and doing what’s best for the fishery is always considered.
But that doesn’t mean they always agree. A hot button topic is whether it’s wise to fish for muskies when water temperatures peak in summer, and many anglers believe that when the surface temperature hits 80 it’s time to put down their rods until the water cools. This debate is probably coming very soon to your favorite social media platform.

Lake Champlain walleyes get a big boost from Vermont Fish & Wildlife stocking changes

Fisheries biologists are using innovative changes in how young walleyes are raised to improve the walleye population and fishing in Lake Champlain.
The new tactic being used by Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has significantly increased the size of walleye fry, improving their chances of survival after they are stocked in the big lake on the New York and Vermont border. The new method has been used for about seven years, and Chad Lambert, president of Lake Champlain Walleye Association (LCWA), said the improvements in the fishery are already being seen.
