Youth turkey hunters break Illinois harvest record

Tilly Jack Cuzzort harvested her first turkey – it most certainly will be the first of many for the 7-year-old Springfield girl.
And that’s exactly what DNR and the state’s hunting community are hoping for. Taken March 31 on Menard County property in DNR’s IRAP program, Cuzzort’s accomplishment is a prime example of Illinois hunting tradition combined with generational change.

The battle to permanently delist the gray wolf in the lower 48 states continues at the federal level now that U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) joined two other senators last week to offer their version of a wolf delisting bill working its way through the House of Representatives.
Johnson joined Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), in introducing U.S. Senate legislation last week aimed at removing the gray wolf from the federal endangered species list once and for all.

The bill now goes to the full House of Representatives. A similar bill introduced by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is working through the U.S. Senate.

Passion for hunting and fishing still burns bright for Wisconsin’s Marie Skic at 97

In the year Marathon County’s Marie Skic was born, the world was a very different place. Charles Lindbergh was flying across the Atlantic for the first time, penicillin had just been invented, and a film called “Steamboat Willie” introduced the nation to a mouse called Mickey.
Much has changed since then, but Skic is still here, and at 97 years old she remains one of Wisconsin’s most avid hunters and anglers. DNR tag sales show she is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, female hunters in the state, depending on what season it is.
