Return of the extinct dire wolf? Not so fast…

Darkness has fallen, and you’re about to climb down from your deer stand on a freezing November night. Suddenly out of nowhere you hear an eerie howl… close, in the direction of your truck.
Your gut tells you this is no normal coyote or wolf. You’d heard about these reintroduced “extinct” dire wolves with oversized teeth and jaws that can weigh up to 200 pounds. Twelve thousand years ago they ate horses, bison, and maybe mammoths. You wonder if this howl is one of those wolves.

Bemidji State University to study muskie survival, movement in Minnesota’s Leech Lake

A widely anticipated study will begin as soon as next month in an effort to determine if there is increased muskie mortality on Minnesota’s Leech Lake due to savvier angling pressure.
As a call to action, in coordination with the Minnesota DNR, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and MN-FISH, researchers at Bemidji State University will lead the charge in tagging and tracking muskies for three years. Bemidji State University Professor Dr. Andrew Hafs is still in the early stages of applying for permits to fit muskies with tracking devices and subsequently monitor them during the tenure of the study.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: A close look at the incredible fisheries that are New York’s Great Lakes

New York’s Great Lakes are a success story in every sense of the word – my favorite bodies of water for nearly seven decades. I grew up on these waters and watched them grow into world class fisheries along the way.
Some of them needed a little help from fish managers, while others simply needed a nudge from Mother Nature. They have come a long way.

Renowned wildlife photographer Jim Brandenburg dies at 79

Jim Brandenburg, whose humble beginnings in nature photography began in southwestern Minnesota and who would gain world acclaim through National Geographic and other publications, died April 4 at his Medina, Minn., home.
The 79-year-old native of Luverne “passed away peacefully … surrounded by his loving family,” according to a family Facebook post that also stated Brandenburg had been receiving treatment for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma the past seven months, with additional complications from pneumonia this year.

Bob Gwizdz: Becky Humphries brings wealth of knowledge to Michigan’s Natural Resources Commission

It might have gone relatively unnoticed by a lot of folks, but the recent announcement that Rebecca Humphries has been appointed to the Natural Resources Commission can only be construed as good news for natural resources policy in Michigan.
I can’t think of a better candidate as Humphries brings a wealth of knowledge as well as a lifetime of service to the board that makes policy decisions for the Department of Natural Resources.

Concealed carry permit becoming less popular in Ohio

Fewer Ohioans are seeking a concealed carry permit, while also a shrinking number who hold such documentation are renewing the ones they were issued.
Even so, the Ohio Attorney General – who is responsible for compiling the statistics targeting concealed carry – has no problem with so-called “constitutional carry.” And he says as well that a concealed carry license does have its benefits.
