Wisconsin wardens at work: Take entire road-killed deer, or nothing at all

A passing motorist saw a person cut off the head of a vehicle-killed white-tailed buck, place the head in the trunk of his car, and drive off.
The passing motorist was pretty sure some aspects of this action may have been illegal and reported the deed to the local Wisconsin DNR game wardens, Mallory Knoble and Mike Burns, who were working the area near Hwy. 133 between Boscobel and Muscoda that day, Oct. 22, 2024.

With trapping season winding down in Illinois, here’s a look at the market for fur prices

Illinois trappers are finished with their season, except for beaver and otter trappers whose season runs through March 31. As trappers turn to marketing their catch, there certainly hasn’t been a whole lot to brag about.
Most of the pricing that was talked about last fall has pretty much come to pass. Most of the wild fur that has been sold so far has gone for about what it sold for last year or perhaps a bit less – a lot less in the case of beaver. There have been a few bright spots.

Promoter, New York State Police try to speed up ammo background checks at Albany Gun Show

Marc Loveland stood near the entrance of the Empire State Plaza Convention Center, in Albany, N.Y., watching dozens of vendors prepare for what would be the second day of his first big gun show in the State Capitol.
The show, now promoted by Loveland’s New York State Sportsmen Association, LLC, returned to Albany for the first time since 2023. As he anticipated the day’s outcome, he confidently reflected on the day prior.

Changes to Minnesota wetland rule pass House committee

The Minnesota House Environment and Natural Resources Finance Policy Committee approved H.F. 8 on Thursday, Feb. 13 – Wetland Conservation Act amendments – in a party-line vote of 7-5 in favor of it advancing to the labor committee.
The bill, sponsored by  Rep. Josh Heintzeman, R-Nisswa, would amend portions of the Wetland Conservation Act to try to streamline the permitting process for businesses. As approved, it would limit the number of people who can comment on a proposed project, dedicate a new full-time position to overseeing applications, and remove redundancies in the permitting process.

University of Illinois expert discusses avian flu, migrating wild birds

Each spring, roughly 3.5 billion wild birds migrate from their warm winter havens to their breeding grounds across North America, eating insects and distributing plant seeds.
Some also carry diseases like avian influenza, a worry for agricultural, environmental and public health authorities. Michael Ward, a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor and an expert on wild bird migration and conservation, recently answered questions about how H5N1 – widely known these days as “avian flu” –  affects wild birds and how they contribute to its distribution across the U.S.
