Gray wolf shot in southeastern Minnesota’s Fillmore County

On Saturday, Jan. 11, the Minnesota DNR received a TIP that a gray wolf had been illegally shot and killed in southeastern Minnesota’s Fillmore County, several miles north of the Iowa-Minnesota border, according to a DNR incident report.
The report states that the gray wolf was illegally shot by 21-year-old hunter Lucas Heusinkveld, of Spring Valley, who was hunting coyotes in early January. According to Minnesota Court Records’ case information, Heusinkveld was convicted in mid-February of a petty misdemeanor for unlawfully taking a protected wild animal.

LCCMR projects bill clears committee in Minnesota; and more lines for walleye stamp buyers

Throughout the past week, the Minnesota Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee has discussed bills primarily focused on appropriating funds for various museums or arts-related work via Legacy amendment dollars.
However, on Thursday, Feb. 13, the committee approved S.F. 506, the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources’ projects bill, to be further discussed by the Committee on Finance. The bill would fund 124 projects in the upcoming project cycle to the tune of $103 million.

A fun and effective approach to running and gunning for turkeys

It was late May in 2022 when my daughter and I got positioned against a huge oak on a narrow tree line between crop fields for our last turkey hunt of the Minnesota season.
The toms already were gobbling as first light peeked over the horizon. I waited a few minutes and then let out some soft yelps on a mouth call. A tom 75 yards down the ridge below us cut me off with a thunderous gobble that left Aubree and me looking at each other with wide eyes.

New law allowing .410s for Illinois turkey hunters will debut this spring season

Luke Garver has fielded many suggestions from turkey hunters since taking his current job in October 2016.
Some good, some not. But come April, when the Illinois spring turkey hunting season opens, one of the suggestions will become reality: a new option for the type of shotgun used to harvest gobblers around the state.
