Commentary: Closing Reynolds Game Farm in New York would be a terrible mistake

There is a new terrible idea flying around Albany. The New York Times recently reported that legislation will be introduced in the State Assembly to shut down the Reynolds Game Farm, in Ithaca, the only state pheasant production facility, and ban a state-run program that has been used to introduce children to the outdoors, farming and upland hunting for over a century.

Federal unveils new 7mm ‘Backcountry’ cartridge

Federal Ammunition has unveiled a new hunting cartridge: the 7mm Backcountry.
Designed to deliver magnum-level performance with a standard bolt face rifle, the new long-action round has three standout numbers: 20, 170, and 3,000. These figures represent its compatibility with 20-inch barrels, its use of 170-grain bullets, and its ability to achieve a hot 3,000 feet-per-second velocity.

Mike Raykovicz: A few outdoor resolutions for 2025; we’ll see if I can keep them

I’m terrible about keeping a New Year’s resolution. For example, last year I was determined not to go “uuuuugh” whenever I got out of a chair or sat down in one.
In fact, I found myself doing that whenever I got up or attempted to get up off the ground while turkey hunting, so I just gave up. I’ve come to realize that these old bones aren’t what they used to be so ‘Uuuuuugh” is just an automatic response to any change in my current position.

An orca that carried her dead calf for weeks in 2018 is doing so once again

An endangered Pacific Northwest orca that made global headlines in 2018 for carrying her dead calf for over two weeks is doing so once again following the death of her new calf, in another sign of grief over lost offspring, researchers said.
The mother orca, known as Tahlequah or J35, has been seen carrying the body of the deceased female calf since Wednesday, the Washington state-based Center for Whale Research said in a Facebook post.

Mike Schoonveld: Crossover clothes for anglers and hunters

My son-in-law couldn’t get away to hunt in the early part of firearm deer season when the temperatures were warmer than normal.
By the time he made time in his schedule it was the last few days of the season, and the temperatures had crashed to unseasonably cold levels. Not only were the temperatures in the lower teens but the wind was in the upper teens, creating wind chills down to below zero.

New York fly-fishing legend Ed Van Put passes away at 88

Renowned fly-fisherman and outdoorsman Ed Van Put, of Livingston Manor, N.Y., passed away Dec. 14 at age 88. Van Put’s status as an angler and conservationist extends beyond the streams of the Catskills where he regularly plied his craft with a fly-rod.
According to his obituary, Edward George “Ed” Van Put was born in Paterson in northern New Jersey in 1936 where he grew up learning to hunt and fish. Following high school graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a medic.
