Tom Venesky: Let Pennsylvania farmers compost the deer they shoot for crop damage

Crop damage caused by wildlife in Pennsylvania, particularly deer, has been at the forefront for years, yet a solution has yet to be found.
The Sunday hunting bill, which is also known as the “crop damage mitigation” bill in some circles, has language that attempts to fix the problem, but in reality it doesn’t even put a dent in the issue.

Stocking of lake sturgeon marks another milestone for the recovery of Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River

Ohio and federal wildlife officials and local agencies gathered at three locations on Oct. 2 to release 60 juvenile lake sturgeons into the Cuyahoga River.
The five dozen fish were each fitted with internal transmitters that will allow tracking of them with land-based receivers as they disperse within this Lake Erie tributary and throughout the Great Lakes. Twenty each were released at Merlins Wharf in Cleveland, Boston Mills at Cuyahoga National Park, and north of the Gorge Dam in Akron.

Michigan teenager shoots 600-pound black bear

Fifteen-year-old Lilly Scott from Croswell, Mich., got off to an amazing start as a hunter. Her first big game kill was a black bear with a live weight over 600 pounds that she shot on Sept. 11, 2024, which was the first day of bear season in the Upper Peninsula.
She was hunting with her grandfather, Arthur Krajenke, when she shot the huge bear that had a dressed weight of 583 pounds.

Another unseasonably hot fall hampers Michigan’s early elk hunt

When a big package arrived in the mail from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Auburn resident Dylan Lightfoot got a little nervous. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, what did I do,’” Lightfoot said.
What he did was hit the Michigan elk hunting lottery. From a pool of between 30,000 and 40,000 applicants, Lightfoot was one of 30 hunters who received a tag to shoot any elk during Michigan’s early elk hunting season in September.
