Dry, unseasonably warm weather hindering things for Minnesota bird hunters

For bird hunters across Minnesota, whether they’re chasing ducks, ruffed grouse, or pheasants, the weather has defined much of the season so far.
With strong southerly winds and temperatures routinely in the 70s, the duck migration has been almost nonexistent, aside from some “calendar migrants” such as ring-necked ducks moving through the state. Parched uplands and forests – save some parts of the Arrowhead region – are the norm, as are receding wetlands, shallow lakes, and river systems.

Hanlontown Slough’s prairie and wetlands attract wildlife and hunters to Iowa’s Worth County

A narrow strip of land, two plus miles long, with a history of being too wet to farm, has become an important waterfowl production area, home to other species in need of conservation and serving to improve water quality in the Cedar River watershed.
That piece of land, north of Hanlontown in Worth County, Iowa, has been developed into a high-quality public area, supporting waterfowl, remnant and reconstructed prairie, while positioned as an important basin to improve water quality.

Ohio’s fall wild turkey harvest lags behind at midpoint

At about the midpoint in Ohio’s revamped fall wild turkey hunting season, the statistics are strongly suggesting a decline in the number of birds shot.
However, the drop cannot be blamed on fewer wild turkeys out there. Just the opposite, in fact. Credit – or blame – the declining number of hunters seeking turkeys when the autumn leaves begin to turn color and cooler temperatures arrive.

Geological survey lab gets $1.1 million in upgrades at Ohio’s Alum Creek State Park

Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio DNR, along with a dozen local officials cut the ribbon on a remodeled and improved Horace R. Collins Geological Survey Lab on Oct. 18. The lab is located inside Alum Creek State Park between Columbus and Delaware in Ohio.
The state spent $1.1 million to update the lab’s exterior, interior and signage. It also added educational displays that highlight the local geology, Lake Erie’s glacial history, and the lab’s ability to record and track earthquakes in Ohio.

Two people arrested after 200 minks are released from Pennsylvania farm

Two people are facing charges following the release of about 200 minks from cages at a central Pennsylvania fur farm.
Most of the animals were recovered, according to an official, unlike a similar incident just over a year ago in which thousands of mink were released into the surrounding area.
