We now know Illinois bowhunters took 71,226 deer last season – a few clicks short of the state record 75,106 taken in 2020-21 but a tick above the 68,625 harvested in 2022-23.
Of greater interest is the fact that two-thirds of antlered deer taken during the 2023-24 archery season had between 7 and 10 points, while 1.3% had 14 points or more. And the hunters? For the first time since 2017 legislation removed restrictions on crossbows, the proportion of Illinois deer harvested with crossbows (53.4%) versus those harvested with compound bows (45.5%) leveled off.

Weather and climate, which are different, play a big role in the life of field biologists. Weather, including the temperature, wind, and rain chances, etc., might dictate if we are able to get in the field to complete a survey or other planned work.
For example, we cannot conduct electrofishing surveys in heavy rain for safety reasons, and netting fish becomes more challenging and can become dangerous under high winds. Temperature, however, plays an extremely important role in everything we do.

The Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge will offer disabled hunters a chance to hunt the River Bottoms Tract from Saturday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 25.
The Wild Sheep Foundation is donating $100,000 to Colorado’s “Wildlife Deserve Better” to defeat the ballot initiative Proposition 127 to ban the hunting and trapping of mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx. The initiative will be on the state’s November ballot after obtaining the required signatures.
“This is wrong on so many levels. It’s not just a Colorado issue,” said Gray N. Thornton, president and CEO of the Wild Sheep Foundation. “Science-based professional wildlife management and the proud traditions of legal, regulated public hunting are increasingly under attack.”
