7th annual David G. Cook Shoot in Wisconsin nabs $12,000 for scholarships

The seventh annual David G. Cook Memorial Shooting for Scholarships sporting clays event, held Sept. 20 at Mayville Gun Club in Wisconsin, raised $12,079 to help fund higher education for students in the building trades.
This year’s event drew 22 teams of 104 shooters, the most ever to compete in the shoot, which was founded by Cook in 2018. Since Cook’s death from brain cancer in 2020, his friends and family have continued the event in his memory.

New York hunters ages 12-15 will once again have the opportunity to go afield with a mentor during the state’s annual youth hunting weekend Oct. 12-14. The dates are Saturday through Monday of Columbus Day weekend.

Wisconsin duck hunter kills Oneida County wolf in self defense

Chase Melton, a 19-year-old duck hunter from Sugar Camp, Wis., shot and killed a gray wolf on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Oneida County when one of several wolves that surrounded him and two younger cousins lunged at their duck blind.
For this article, Wisconsin Outdoor News was able to interview an older hunter who was set up near Melton and his cousins. Jim Lund, of St. Germain, witnessed the entire episode that unfolded while hunting a tributary of the Rainbow Flowage in Oneida County between the towns of Sugar Camp and St. Germain.

New DNR deer unit proposal on the table in Wisconsin

Deer hunters who have begged the Wisconsin DNR – and then legislators – to ditch the county deer unit system and return to the former “numbered” and habitat-based units of pre-2013 may finally see some movement in that direction following a meeting of the DNR’s deer advisory committee.

New York DEC boosts stocking of pheasants, adds locations

Early in 2023, New York’s pheasant propagation program and thus the fall pheasant hunting season were in jeopardy after an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) wiped out most of the population of ringnecks at the Reynolds Game Farm, near Ithaca, the state’s only breeding facility.
This year, not only is the pheasant season guaranteed, but state wildlife officials say it will be bigger and better than ever.

Ben Moyer: Hunting’s approval runs broad and deep in Pennsylvania

You can feel tension these days. It portends the political climax we’ll reach in a few weeks. It would all be more constructive if the intense rhetoric could be tamped down to rational discourse. Everyone will be glad when it’s over.
There is one facet of the hype uniquely relevant to readers of this publication, and which readers can analyze and reject. That’s because we have credible informative resources that tell the quieter truth. First, consider the misleading exaggerations.

Mike Schoonveld: Four steps to get out of messes that come with trolling

Trolling used to be simple. Each person in the boat would select a lure, drop it into the lake and let out some line.
Once the right amount of line was uncoiled off the spool, each angler would simply hold onto the rod until something bit the lure. Then salmon were stocked in the Great Lakes, and nearly extinct walleyes came back in Lake Erie. Innovative anglers started festooning their boats with rod holders, downriggers, planer board masts and other paraphernalia to up the number of rods that could be trolled and to keep the lines and lures separated.

Streams of Thought: Vacancies continue to hinder Minnesota DNR’s fisheries field offices

There’s really not down time, so to speak, when it comes to the operations at Minnesota’s 29 area fisheries offices. That said, things get pretty serious about this time of year, when the task of removing fingerling-size walleyes from lakes and ponds for stocking in waters across the state gets underway.
It’s this stocking (and that of other fish species) upon which a healthy portion of the state’s half-million anglers rely.
