Pennsylvania fisheries managers rethink stocking of the best wild trout waters

Pennsylvania fisheries managers are taking another look at how they handle the stocking of Class A wild trout streams – a practice that rankles many coldwater conservationists.
At its July meeting, the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission board decided to organize an internal working group on the historically controversial issue following a presentation on Class A stream stockings by Kristopher Kuhn, the agency’s fisheries bureau director.

Another good year expected when Ohio’s archery whitetail season starts Sept. 28

It should be another banner season for archery deer hunters in Ohio.
That is the word according to Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer project administrator for Ohio Outdoor News’ annual deer archery preview.
“If you’re looking forward to seeing lots of deer and possibly harvesting a nice buck it’ll be a great season for you,” Tonkovich said.

BASS sets 2025 rules for forward-facing sonar

Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society (B.A.S.S.) on Wednesday, Sept. 4, announced that it is not banning live sonar for its 2025 season. Instead, the anglers in its Bassmaster Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic must now follow new equipment standardization rules that place what the organization calls “guardrails” on what and how much forward-facing sonar technology anglers can use.

Prepare yourself for the fall hunting season

With the close of summer, you’ll notice a swing from fishing rods to shotguns. For many it’s a seamless transition and welcomed, even if the tradeoff means we’re one step closer to winter.
People who hunt all fall, starting with early goose, then doves and working through upland game and waterfowl, gradually acclimate their body to extreme temperatures and physical exertion. This natural progression serves as a tune-up for October pheasant and November’s deer season.

Teenage boys dive into action to save drowning yellow Lab during Minnesota fishing trip

To hear 14-year-old Jacob Jensen, of Andover, Minn., tell the story, he was having something of an out-of-body experience. He wasn’t thinking as much as he was reacting to the dire circumstances before him.
It became abundantly clear something had to be done. Time was of the essence.
His fishing buddy and close friend, 14-year-old Mason Millet, also of Andover, had the same thoughts coursing through his mind.

Squirrels are perfect for starting out young hunters

September used to have that sweet and sour feeling. Sweet because squirrel season opened Sept. 1. Sour because my leisurely, summer mornings sipping hot, black coffee while relaxing and writing in my journals, or reading hunting and fishing magazines, ended.
Sadly, September officially ended my summer vacation. Being an occupational welding and cabinetmaking teacher in a vocational school, September meant the beginning of another school year. My leisurely mornings quickly became busy earlier than my summer mornings.
My weekends, however, were saved for woodland wanderings, sometimes alone and sometimes with my own children.
