Outdoor Insights: Fish and Wildlife Service finalizes plans to kill thousands of barred owls

In mid-July, I wrote in this space about a federal proposal to cull barred owls in the Pacific Northwest in the name of saving spotted owls. Last Wednesday, Aug. 28, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service finalized its plan to kill up to 450,000 barred owls during next three decades in several western states.

Steve Piatt: Get the most out of your squirrel and bear meat

Our freezers are already pretty well stocked as we head into another hunting season. There’s leftover venison, including some backstraps and roasts, as well as plenty of burger mixed with pork fat.

A couple pheasant and turkey breasts, some already ground into burger and others pulled and barbecued and ready to be thawed for a quick meal. Walleye and salmon fillets from summer outings on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. But there’s a couple things missing, and I desperately want to add to the freezer this fall with bear and squirrel meat.

The project was presented to the LCCMR during its annual project presentation period at the end of June.

In every corner of the country, small, tight-knit communities are bound together by shared passions, histories, and a love for the land they call home. Two such groups are the “River Rats” and the waterfowlers who routinely hunt the lower Kaskaskia in Illinois.
