Southern Illinois University tracking invasive nutria among beavers, muskrats, otters

Derek Whipkey is studying the distribution of beavers, muskrats, river otters, and mink across the bottom portion of Illinois.
While he’s at it, the researcher at Southern Illinois University also is looking into reports of a fifth semiaquatic mammal species that is gradually making its way into the region – an unwanted new neighbor that wrecks habitats and spreads disease. Yup, the nutria.

Number of counties in Illinois’ Restricted Archery Zone holds at five

While Illinois DNR did expand the length of the Restricted Archery Zone deer season this year, it did not add counties to the special zone it created back in 2018.
When the bow season opens Oct. 1,  hunters in Champaign, Douglas, Macon, Moultrie, and Piatt counties will only be allowed to take antlered deer. Until now, the special season had that “buck-only”requirement until Oct. 15. It will stretch until Oct. 31 in 2024.

State Roundup: Audit of Wisconsin DNR budget on tap

Wisconsin sportsmen will see an audit of the DNR budget after all. Sen. Rob Stafsholt (R-New Richmond) was successful in seeking such action on Thursday, Aug. 29, when the Joint Legislative Audit Committee directed the non-partisan Legislative Audit Bureau to conduct a comprehensive audit of the DNR Fish and Wildlife Account.
“This audit is a huge step towards figuring out where sportsmen’s and sportswomen’s license dollars go,” Stafsholt said in a press release.

Gear items that make mobile hunting for whitetails more enjoyable

There seems to be a path taken for those who choose to go the route of being as mobile as possible in the whitetail woods.
We start out by dipping our toes in the water. You know that bulky stand that has been hanging on the same tree for years? That can be pulled down and strapped to your back. It’s loud and a pain to hang each time, but I used it, along with cumbersome sticks, for a couple of seasons. Bit by bit, I have chipped away at getting gear that makes me more efficient and comfortable. Below are some items that have stood out over years of trial and error as really making mobile hunting a more enjoyable experience.
