Preventing largemouth bass cannibalism is focus of Southern Illinois University study

The largemouth bass is popular among anglers, who know that familiar “thump” of a fish hitting a lure.
But researchers at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale are studying ways to keep the infamously cannibalistic species off its own menu.
Can fishermen benefit from the research? It’s too early to say. Can anglers learn from it? Most certainly they can.

Southern Illinois University tracking invasive nutria among beavers, muskrats, otters

Derek Whipkey is studying the distribution of beavers, muskrats, river otters, and mink across the bottom portion of Illinois.

Illinois’ deer increased movement in study areas as more humans hunkered down during pandemic

Deer and other wildlife moved more freely during the COVID-19 lockdown, according to a new study that included whitetails in Illinois and a researcher at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Fish interactions in Upper Mississippi River basin gets closer look to aid management

Extending from southern Illinois all the way up to Minnesota, the Upper Mississippi River basin’s system comprises an extremely complex network of streams and watersheds.
Little is known about how those systems and the native fishes in them interact. Shay Valentine, a Southern Illinois University Carbondale doctoral student, is combining various lab techniques to examine habitats and diets of 12 fish species to learn more about how they use resources in the river.
