Pennsylvania gets funds to bolster imperiled massasauga rattlesnakes

Pennsylvania will receive $1.2 million in federal funds aimed at bolstering numbers of the critically imperiled Eastern massasauga rattlesnake.
A grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be used by the Pennsylvania Game Commission to expand massasauga habitat in the snake’s historic range in the northwestern part of the state.

Commission approves new oil bids for Ohio state lands

The Oil and Gas Land Management Commission recently selected the winning bids to lease mineral rights under select Ohio DNR (ODNR) and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) properties. Under Ohio law, the commission was required to select the “highest and best bid.”
On July 10, the commission posted the nominated leasing parcels for bid. August 9 was the deadline to submit bids. Following the submissions, the commission members reviewed the bids to determine the highest and best bids.

Unique ice-fishing image captures Ohio Division of Wildlife’s photo contest title

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife featured some of the best wildlife photography and art at the Ohio State Fair.
The Division of Wildlife’s annual photo contest produced a winning image depicting an ice fishing scene from a unique vantage point. More than 600 photos were submitted by talented photographers across Ohio. Six category winners were also chosen.

Bowling Green State University researchers say removal of dam improved Sandusky Bay’s water quality in Ohio

After years of detecting harmful algae in Lake Erie’s Sandusky Bay, Bowling Green State University (BGSU) researchers recently discovered that a toxic cyanobacterium called planktothrix has essentially disappeared.
While other algae are still present, BGSU scientists have determined a likely cause behind the drop in toxins, signaling a major improvement for a body of water that millions rely upon for life, work, and play.
