Les Winkeler: Gaining a better appreciation for skunks after rare daylight encounters

If the Discovery Channel can have Shark Week, why can’t I have a week dedicated to skunks?
The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week is well promoted and likely a highly lucrative event. Skunk Week, on the other hand, was quiet and accidental. And, frankly, not half as scary.
By the same token, seeing skunks in broad daylight three out of four days is unusual.

Any reason to own a 10-gauge for waterfowl anymore, or are they simply overkill?

With the trend in waterfowl guns moving toward the small bores, it’s fair to ask if there’s any reason for anyone to shoot a 10-gauge anymore.
Browning recently discontinued the last two production 10-gauges in its BPS and Gold 10, a sign that the majority of waterfowlers are ready to move on from our biggest legal bore. Yet, the 10-gauge hangs on among a small niche following.

Outdoor Insights: Minnesota DNR takes first step in evaluating how live sonar is affecting an important Minnesota sportfish

Has the DNR taken a step toward addressing the great 21st Century live-sonar fishing debate?
Per an agency press release in the Aug. 9 edition of Outdoor News, the DNR is requesting public input on several proposed experimental and special fishing regulations for the 2025 fishing season. Among them is a proposal to lower the crappie limit to five daily on seven lakes in Otter Tail County and one in Lac qui Parle County.

Commentary: Come November Election Day, funding for environment in Minnesota also on the line

The U.S. general election is now less than 80 days away, and it’s shaping up to be an especially historic one for Minnesota.
The balance of power in the Legislature is closely contested, a U.S. Senate seat is on the ballot for the first time since 2020, and Minnesota’s governor is a vice presidential candidate. These races may be tight, but we hope that one item on the ballot won’t be: the constitutional amendment to enhance and renew funding for the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Upcoming Minnesota DNR auction includes more than 300 confiscated items

During the past few years, the Minnesota DNR has seized, then confiscated various fishing, hunting, and trapping equipment from individuals who’ve violated game and fish laws.
Those confiscated items will be auctioned off, virtually, during two upcoming auctions. Online bidding for the first auction begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 where interested individuals can sift through items. If participants wish to see items in person, they may go to Hiller Auction Service in Zimmerman from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, too.

Back bars and side bars offer many benefits for today’s archery hunters

Stabilizers are synonymous with archery, but especially within the competitive target scene; the hunting side of things has always seemed to slip by the wayside.
Any seasoned bowhunter has more than likely noticed the uptick in the rather elaborate stabilizer systems on some of today’s modern hunting bows. It is just that – a system. I can distinctly remember my first “real” bow as a 12-year-old kid in the mid-’90s, it was a PSE Spirit with a 4-inch rubber stabilizer screwed into the front portion of the riser just below the grip. Like every other typical hunting bow of that era, that was it, we called it good.
