Man pleads guilty to poaching popular buck known as ‘King Louie’ in New York

A Montgomery County man faces over $3,000 in fines and court fees after pleading guilty to four charges connected to an early December poaching incident of a popular trophy caliber buck.
According to police reports, in the early morning hours of Dec. 5, Christopher Brownell, of Fultonville, illegally killed what would have been a New York State record book buck. The buck, known locally as King Louie, was recognizable as it carried a massive, palmated set of antlers and was thought to be 8.5 years old at the time of his demise.

Black ice, big trout (and walleyes, too)

Eager footsteps grounded in common-sense trepidation guide our way out onto the first few inches of jet-black “glass.”

Every hit of the spud bar resonates through our eardrums. Flashes of light from the headlamp catch the childish little smirk as it quickly passes over your partner’s face. Standing upon a transparent boundary line between the world we live in, and what swims beneath, we feel the rush once again. It’s go time.
Early season ice is usually not much; a few inches at best, but that crystal clear, rock hard, “black ice” is the strongest there is.

Trophy buck, known by local hunters as ‘King Louie,’ taken illegally in New York

A buck of legendary clout, known to hunters within the Fonda/Johnstown locale in Fulton and Montgomery counties in New York as “King Louie,” was poached during the wee hours of the morning of Dec. 5.
New York State Department Of Environmental Conservation Law Enforcement Officers have charged Christpoher Brownell, of Fultonville, with two misdemeanors and two violations after he confessed to taking the deer at night while hunting from the road and while trespassing.

Back bars and side bars offer many benefits for today’s archery hunters

Stabilizers are synonymous with archery, but especially within the competitive target scene; the hunting side of things has always seemed to slip by the wayside.
Any seasoned bowhunter has more than likely noticed the uptick in the rather elaborate stabilizer systems on some of today’s modern hunting bows. It is just that – a system. I can distinctly remember my first “real” bow as a 12-year-old kid in the mid-’90s, it was a PSE Spirit with a 4-inch rubber stabilizer screwed into the front portion of the riser just below the grip. Like every other typical hunting bow of that era, that was it, we called it good.

New York’s Venison for Vets program expands as hunters help feed those in need

A program called Venison for Veterans that began in Montgomery County, N.Y., 16 years ago continues to broaden.
It started with a simple chat between Assemblyman George Amedore (who was at the time running) and Tom Georgia of Tribes Hill at an Amsterdam Mohawks baseball game.
“I always had a dream of taking care of our less fortunate seniors and veterans, not in the form of money, but hearty protein of real value,” Georgia said. “I pitched the idea to George and he told me if he was elected he would make it happen. Long story short, he was, and the idea came to life and grew and grew.”

The .410 is the little turkey gun that could

Not all that long ago any “real” turkey hunter would have discredited the idea of using a .410 to hunt turkeys. Turkey hunters endured a period where it felt like if you were not shooting the biggest, baddest, and heaviest, 3 1⁄2-inch, 12 gauge load, you simply were not going to be able to kill that weary old gobbler.
They were unforgiving, shoulder-punishing monsters — the max dram equivalent of pushing 2-plus ounces of copper-plated lead shot, brought on brutal, bruise-inducing recoil. Over the last few years there have been some monumental changes in turkey load technology.

An Adirondack ice fishing sampler: Here are some lakes to target

As we roll into the winter season many chilly adventures can be had in the Adirondacks. One of the most popular being ice fishing.
There are over 3,000 lakes and ponds contained within the blue line of the Adirondack Park; obviously not all of them are open to ice fishing. Choosing a random lake on a whim seems like a daunting task to undertake if you are unfamiliar with the Adirondacks. From lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon, to walleyes, perch and panfish, there is an Adirondack lake to appeal to every angler’s preferred species and skill set.

New York teen bags big Missouri tom with seven beards

A Saratoga County teen has shaken up the turkey-hunting world this spring after bagging a seven-bearded tom while on a hunting trip with family and friends in Missouri.

Joey Berlin, of Clifton Park, had no idea what would be in store for he and his dad, Tim, while hunting the family’s leased property in the Midwest. But he would come out of the hunt with a gobbler that weighed 20 pounds, 10 ounces, had 1-inch spurs, and a total length of the beards that measured 53 3/16 inches.
