Commentary: U.S. House considering ‘dirty water’ bill to strip away key Clean Water Act protections

Recent polling shows that while Minnesotans have their share of political disagreements, those disagreements largely end, in a sense, at the water’s edge.
A whopping 86% of Minnesotans reached in a March opinion poll agreed that protecting water is very or extremely important. And while it’s true that those in the Land of 10,000 Lakes have a special relationship with our waters, we’re not alone.

Commentary: Come November Election Day, funding for environment in Minnesota also on the line

The U.S. general election is now less than 80 days away, and it’s shaping up to be an especially historic one for Minnesota.
The balance of power in the Legislature is closely contested, a U.S. Senate seat is on the ballot for the first time since 2020, and Minnesota’s governor is a vice presidential candidate. These races may be tight, but we hope that one item on the ballot won’t be: the constitutional amendment to enhance and renew funding for the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Commentary: Minnesota’s floods have human fingerprints

Not long ago, large areas of Minnesota – basements, roads, fields – were underwater. From the Minnesota River Valley to northern St. Louis County to areas of the Twin Cities, communities faced some of the most severe floods they’ve seen in recent memory. After recent droughts parched the state, we’re getting more rain than what we wished for.
Like the drought, however, flooding has human fingerprints.

Commentary: EPA’s plan for Great Lakes ships falls short

The port of Duluth-Superior is a major economic engine for Minnesota, handling an average of 35 million short tons of cargo every year. Ships leaving the harbor carry iron ore and grain, while those inbound bring us wind turbines and limestone.
Unfortunately, those ships also can carry something unwanted: invasive species that disrupt our Great Lakes ecosystems.

Commentary: Minnesotans to vote in ’24 on environment’s share of lottery proceeds

In the Minnesota Environmental Partnership’s recent 2023 legislative wrap-up, we covered many of the tremendous victories the environmental community won at the State Capitol this year.
But one of our most important – and most challenging – wins this session will bear its fruit on Nov. 5, 2024. On that Election Day, Minnesotans will vote to renew the 40% share of proceeds from the state lottery that goes to our environment and natural resources.
