What’s good for the meadowlark is good for North Dakota’s deer

The Western meadowlark is North Dakota’s state bird but did you know one of it’s closest relatives is the less embraced common blackbird?
Yes, meadowlarks are members of the blackbird family, which also includes orioles and bobolinks. A couple of other interesting facts: one nestling meadowlark consumes one-third pound of insects during its 12 days in the nest.
If you’re not as impressed with its diet then maybe you’ll find yourself more interested to know meadowlarks and deer need and share a similar grassland home.

Bear harvest expected to be on par with previous seasons in New York

Bear hunters in New York taking to the woods this fall should expect things to be much like they’ve been the past two hunting seasons.
State wildlife officials, with few exceptions, expect the forthcoming bear seasons in both the Northern and Southern Zones to be on par with those of 2022 and 2023, and years immediately prior.

Black bear mauls 3-year-old girl in tent at Montana campground

A black bear mauled and injured a 3-year-old girl in a tent at a private campground in Montana just north of Yellowstone National Park over the weekend, state wildlife officials said.
The girl was attacked about 10 p.m. Sunday at a campground south of Red Lodge and taken to the hospital in Billings. Fish, Wildlife and Parks didn’t have any information on her condition on Tuesday, game warden Randy Hutzenbiler said.

Most who apply for Ohio’s controlled hunts face long odds

That people believe in miracles is reflected in how many of them are willing to accept the one-in-302.5 million odds of winning the Mega Million Dollar lottery by matching all of the numbers and the Powerball.
Yet hunters are no different. And though the odds of winning one of the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s lottery-selected controlled deer, small-game, waterfowl, and waterfowl blind hunts are better than one-in-302.5 million, the chances are still stacked against an applicant.

New voluntary ‘Upland Bird Hunter Diary’ expected to provide clearer picture of upland bird hunting in Minnesota

It’s safe to say few hunters sit by their mailboxes, hoping they’ve been selected to fill out a post-season survey for the Minnesota DNR. For bird hunters who are willing – or eager, even – to contribute data that will aid directly in the management of their favorite species, there’s no longer a need to wait.
The Upland Bird Hunter Diary is set to go live on the DNR website Aug. 15, and it’s expected to provide a bigger, clearer picture of upland bird hunting in Minnesota.
