Tips for squirrel hunters as opener nears in Illinois

The telltale black stains around its mouth told me that the squirrel I had just shot was hitting the walnuts. Finding the motherload tree or stand can provide the lucky hunter with season-long action.
The Illinois squirrel season starts Aug. 1 and runs through Feb. 15, 2025, with some restrictions. Bag limits remain at a daily total of five gray and fox squirrels. Hungry bushytails will start working on the walnut’s green skins and dark hulls as soon as the meat inside is fit to eat.

Rare elements are in abandoned coal mine drainage

Down a long gravel road, tucked into the hills in West Virginia, is a low-slung building where researchers are extracting essential elements from an old coal mine that they hope will strengthen the nation’s energy future.
They aren’t mining the coal that powered the steel mills and locomotives that helped industrialize America – and that is blamed for contributing to global warming. Rather, researchers are finding that groundwater pouring out of this and other abandoned coal mines contains the rare earth elements and other valuable metals that are vital to making everything from electric vehicle motors to rechargeable batteries to fighter jets smaller, lighter or more powerful.

Outdoor museum and education center opens in Clare, Michigan, highlighting hunting as conservation

The ribbon was cut and the doors opened officially on July 24 at the 16,400-square-foot Jay’s & Webber Wildlife & Education Center in Clare. The center is adjacent to the 90,000-square-foot Jay’s Sporting Goods on South Clare Avenue.
The center actually opened with limited hours on July 5, but the official opening came a couple weeks later.
“We want to share the story of Wayne Webber,” a conservationist and skilled hunter, “who donated 244 full-sized mounts for use in the museum, and be a beacon for providing outdoor stewardship,” Matt Poet, son of owner Jeff Poet and a member of the center’s advisory board, told Michigan Outdoor News.

Canine distemper hurting raccoon populations in Ohio, elsewhere

If one looks over the police blotter that is published in the Sandusky Register, you would notice an abnormally high number of calls that have been made to local law enforcement agencies requesting help dealing with sick raccoons.
Similar reports have popped up in newspapers in Akron (2023), Cincinnati (2023), Youngstown (2021), and well beyond Ohio this spring and in each of the past several years about “zombie raccoons” wandering around during daylight hours. Despite the suspicion and fears of some observers, rabies is not usually the cause of raccoon sicknesses, especially in Ohio.

Ohio’s Lake Loramie Passport to Fishing event a big hit

Lake Loramie is steeped in Ohio history. More than 200 years ago, it was a lone trading outpost and named for an early fur trader, Pierre Loramie.
The lake, which was completed in 1840, was built as part of the Ohio canal system. It is one of five lakes created to feed the canal system. A short feeder canal connected Lake Loramie to the main canal. It was in 1917 that the Ohio state legislature approved the report to create a state park officially to be known as Lake Loramie.

Michigan shed hunter kills black bear in self defense

Twenty-three-year-old Kyle Nelson from Norway, Mich., killed a black bear in self defense while looking for shed antlers this past spring.
Nelson shot the bear with a CPX2 9 mm handgun that he has with him every time he goes in the woods.
“I was walking along a swamp bottom where I got a buck last fall to try to find antlers from bucks that made it through hunting season,” Nelson said. “At one point I heard a noise by a big pine tree. When I looked toward the sound, a bear stuck its head around the tree about 10 yards away.”
