In a most unfortunate turn of events not of her own doing, Sandy Bihn’s name is nearly synonymous with blue-green algae blooms.
After all, the toxic blooms have followed her for most of her adult life. And, she’s worked tirelessly to fight them. Bihn, who lives in Oregon, right on Maumee Bay, fights the good fight against these toxic blooms every day as the director of the Lake Erie Waterkeeper Association. She’s held that position since 2005 and has witnessed a lot of change in so-called big farming practices in the Maumee Basin.

It was a Monday like most Mondays during waterfowl season for the past decade. I hunted the Shiawassee State Game Area southwest of Saginaw, Mich. Ducks weren’t flying, even though the day started out rainy and finished with winds in the 12- to 20-mph range (albeit from the southwest). We ended up with just five ducks on an otherwise quiet afternoon.
Although the ducks were scarce, stale, or both, we saw coverts of coots tootling around doing whatever it is that makes coots happy.
