Commentary: Many threats to public lands and waters within Project 2025

Stories about “Project 2025” have been circulating in the news, but what many hunters and anglers may not realize are the implications it would have for the conservation of our nation’s public lands and waters.
This presidential transition document – organized by the Heritage Foundation – establishes recommendations for a potential second Trump administration. The nation’s sportsmen and women should be asking some hard questions about this document.

Hudson River researchers in New York boat rare Atlantic sturgeon

In June, biologists and volunteers working for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program caught a female Atlantic sturgeon, estimated to weigh about 220 pounds, in the Hudson River near the Town of Hyde Park.
Fish of that size are not unusual, and the DEC has captured even larger sturgeon this year. However, the fact that the fish was a mature female made it a notable catch that grabbed national headlines.

Indiana research looks at hunting’s effect on deer-vehicle collisions

Illinois DNR has long used deer–vehicle collision statistics as the basis for making management decisions regarding the state’s deer hunting seasons.
A new study by Purdue University in neighboring Indiana suggests recreational hunting of deer reduces those collisions, which has always been a benefit of the Illinois’ process. But Purdue’s research adds a bonus: “Targeted recreational hunting can reduce animal-vehicle collisions and generate substantial revenue for wildlife management agencies,” is how the study was titled in the scientific journal Science of The Total Environment.

New York DEC encourages bear awareness

If it seems like bears have been in the news more than usual lately, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says there are several reasons.
Early and mid-summer usually brings a bumper crop of news stories about bears appearing in places they’re not typically seen, from backyards and suburban streets to residential communities. DEC says most bears spotted in unlikely or unusual places in early summer fall into three categories.
