Iowa DNR dispatching wildland firefighters across the western United States

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fire Program has dispatched wildland firefighters to help with fire management efforts across the Rocky Mountains, the west coast and the Pacific Northwest.
Iowa DNR staff and other Iowa-based firefighters are members of hand crews in Colorado and South Dakota. Other agency staff are assisting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fire engines in Wyoming.

Wet spring may impact 2024 pheasant hunting season in Iowa

Iowa’s pheasant population typically shows increases following mild winters with springs that are dryer and warmer than normal.
While last winter was average to below average snowfall, spring was wetter than normal, with May coming in as the eighth wettest in 152 years of records. Given the statewide information, the weather model is predicting pheasant populations will likely be lower for the 2024 hunting season.

Jeff Frischkorn: There’s something about fishing farm ponds

The black, soft-plastic frog with its pair of sensually undulating rubber legs almost made it safely across a gap in the long-leaf pondweed.
Had the fishing lure completed its journey across the interlocking spatterdock leaves, safety would be assured. Of course, since this was a lure the whole purpose was to fool a bass into thinking this placebo was the real deal. The black froggie did – and did not – make it across, though. The “did” part came after the “didn’t” part. That is when a bass of around 15 or so inches created an audible and visual geyser of water when it nicked the lure.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Former record lake trout from New York was on a feeding frenzy

What causes a fish to grow to record proportions? Age certainly helps, and genetics may play a role. However, one big reason is an available food source that is both plentiful and full of nutrition. Mother Nature may also play an important role, too, in determining how things happen in the outdoor environment.
A perfect case in point was New York’s record lake trout that was caught in the shadow of Old Fort Niagara at the mouth of the mighty Niagara River on the fringe of the famed Niagara Bar. The year was 1994 – 30 years ago!

Lake Sara’s 7-pound bass confirms slot limit progress for Effingham County water in Illinois

DNR’s efforts to improve the size of largemouth bass in Lake Sara have apparently paid off – biologists sampling the lake last year found bigger bass in good condition.
More telling, tournament weigh-ins on the lake in 2023 featured several bass that topped the magical 6-pound mark. One lunker brought to the scale by an angler was more than 7 pounds.
