Bill Hilts, Jr.: Remembering New York’s rainbow/steelhead record fish 20 years later

Do you know what the New York State freshwater fish record catches are?
Based on my personal experiences, I would have to say most people would not. They may know a few of their favorites (ballpark weights) but actual records would be limited. I had a couple friends through the years catch record fish and either didn’t realize it or didn’t care to enter it for personal reasons. One was an 18-plus pound walleye in the lower Niagara River 30 years ago.

A passion for bettering habitat makes Craig DeJong Minnesota Outdoor News’ Person of the Year

In late April, at his home near Glenwood in west-central Minnesota, Craig DeJong was asked to reflect on the many wildlife habitat projects he’s helped come to fruition.
“Would you want to see one?” DeJong asks. “I’d like to show you one because a picture is worth a thousand words on that.”
An hour later, DeJong is standing along a shoreline overlooking a small wetland on a state wildlife management area that’s been completely revitalized during the past few years. A mix of birds sing on this cloudy afternoon, a bit of mist in the air. The honking of Canada geese overwhelms the songbird chorus. It’s a completely different scene from only a handful of years ago, before work was done on the property.

Charter fishing means good times on the Great Lakes right now; here’s how to increase your odds of success

If you’ve ever thought about booking a Great Lakes charter fishing trip, 2024 might be the year to see what it’s all about.
A mild winter has led to catches heating up earlier than usual this spring, and increased stocking across the Great Lakes states and improving natural recruitment in recent years means there’s plenty of fish available. Even though there are hundreds of U.S. Coast Guard-licensed charter captains around the lake, anglers who call early have the best chance to find an opening on a preferred date.

With Illinois’ spring turkey season in the books, hunters wait for numbers

The last turkey has been called in in Illinois this spring, the last turkey hunter has tagged a bird – now it’s a matter of waiting as biologists do some calculating.
Will 2024 finally be the year a spring turkey harvest record is broken?
The north zone season ended May 16, a week after south zone hunters put away their calls and gear. As of May 10, DNR had not given any indication of what the harvest numbers look like. But the five-week regular season was given an early boost by youth hunters who set a new record by taking 2,006 birds.

Steve Piatt: One happy dog, despite the cancer

Over the years, each of the seven Labrador retrievers we’ve owned has occupied a spot in our hearts, and along the way acquired various titles we’ve placed on them. Magic was the toughest, Brooks the smartest, Ben the best hunter, Maddie the best behaved, Hailey the quirkiest, and Riley, our latest and youngest, the prettiest.
Finn, our eight-year-old fox red Lab, is undoubtedly the happiest in a lineup of happy hunting dogs. Tail constantly wagging, always ready to hop in the truck, quick to greet everyone and, even though the elder dog in our home these days, typically the one to initiate any rousing play with Riley.

Ohio Sea Grant funds yellow perch experiment

Yellow perch is currently a hot commodity, with retail prices well above $20 per pound at the fish markets. With wild supplies not sufficient to meet demand, there has been increased efforts in recent years to develop aquaculture techniques for the species.
Yet, traditional aquaculture comes with high operating expenses, water pollution concerns, and parasite and/or disease outbreaks, creating variable production. This makes profitability uncertain, which has limited interest in starting such operations in the Midwest.

Army Corps of Engineers to remove dam in Monongahela River near Pittsburgh this July

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will set off its own fireworks in July when it begins demolishing an antiquated dam on the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh, but they’ll happen underwater and there won’t be much to see.
Although the 650-foot-wide Elizabeth dam will be blasted with explosives, all that will be visible from land is a puff of smoke, according to the Corps’ project manager Stephen Frost, who said the event “will be pretty anticlimactic.”
Demolition of the dam will occur in stages and is the final phase in a $1.23 billion modernization of the lower Mon’s navigational system that began 30 years ago.

Unusual littering case from Wisconsin involves dead minnows dumped by bait dealers

It would be great if everyone treated public and private land as though they owned it. Tires, old TVs, deer carcasses, duck parts, and fish heads and skins have a proper disposal grounds or cemetery. Anything less may be littering.
Madi Bryan, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) field warden in the eastern half of St. Croix County, received a hotline complaint in early 2024 that someone was dumping fish along a remote road in the area she patrols.
