An Amazon adventure leads to massive fish for Minnesotans

Adam Van Tassell and his 13-year-old son, Brock, are experts in exotic fishing travel. They’ve been to Brazil, Costa Rica, Belize, and other destinations around the world for once-in-a-lifetime fishing experiences.
Not surprisingly, the father-son duo’s YouTube fishing channel motto is, “We live to fish.” But this winter the Van Tassells had an adventure in the Amazon that surpassed even their own lofty standards. Adam Van Tassell hooked into and landed a fire peacock bass (Cichla miraenae) that he believes is the biggest ever caught. Here’s how two Minnesotans came out of the Amazon alive, with a record fish to boot.

Oh, the weather: Where will walleyes be on the Minnesota Opener?

Several weeks ago, it looked like lake conditions were ahead of normal following a lengthy warm spell. But the past two weeks have been miserable, weather-wise. Now it appears lake water temperatures are below normal and could make the May 11 Minnesota fishing opener a real challenge.
Water temperatures in the north and northwest have been stuck in the low 40s for about three weeks, and it’s cold nights that are the culprit. Here are some thoughts for the upcoming fishing opener.

Public can comment on draft of Michigan’s Saginaw Bay walleye/perch management plan through June 1

It’s no secret that the walleye is king of Michigan’s Saginaw Bay fishery, the yellow perch deposed but still cherished.
That will remain the case, according to a draft Walleye and Perch Recreational Management Plan for Saginaw Bay, until conditions change: a new source of prey in the Bay, or a dramatic decline in walleye numbers, to let more small perch grow to adulthood. Those changes are not necessarily in the cards, nor desired without qualification.

Steve Sarley: Lake Michigan a good bet for spring coho action in Illinois

If you have never had the pleasure of going out on Lake Michigan to experience the great salmon and trout fishing that is available, I’d recommend that you book a trip right away.
There are many fine boats run by many fine Illinois charter captains out of numerous ports on the big pond. Most of them bring in fine catches. One of my favorites is Captain Caleb Weiner of Migrator Charters out of Winthrop Harbor, just south of the Wisconsin Border.

Call like you mean it to attract mid-season toms

There’s a reason you don’t see really good turkey callers shun mouth calls. While it’s possible to cover the turkey’s vocabulary with slates and box calls, the diaphragm call is the best option if you want to say something with some attitude.
This is often the difference between sitting out in the woods with your fingers crossed and actually working birds into range. It’s also something that doesn’t come naturally to most folks, because they don’t understand what they’re really saying to the birds.
