Oh, the weather: Where will walleyes be on the Minnesota Opener?

Steve Carney suggests a number of tips for this year’s fishing-opener angler. For one thing, it’s likely that walleyes will be in shallow water, given recent weather conditions. For another, if you can’t find walleyes, crappies are an excellent secondary option. (Photo courtesy of Steve Carney)

Several weeks ago, it looked like lake conditions were ahead of normal following a lengthy warm spell. But the past two weeks have been miserable, weather-wise. Now it appears lake water temperatures are below normal and could make the May 11 Minnesota fishing opener a real challenge.
Water temperatures in the north and northwest have been stuck in the low 40s for about three weeks, and it’s cold nights that are the culprit. Here are some thoughts for the upcoming fishing opener.
